1943年ナチに占領されていたデンマークでのお話。10歳のAnnemarieが主人公で、親友でありユダヤ人のEllenたちをいかにして助けたかという物語。「物語」ではあるものの、あとがきからもわかるように実話からエッセンスをとりだし物語に再構成したような感じで、個々のエピソードはかなり実話。

But ordinary people like the Rosens and the Johansens?Annmarie admitted to herselef, snuggling there in the quiet dark,thath she was glad to be an ordinary person who would nevere be called upon for courage.
物語の前半ではこんなふうに思っていたAnnemarieが、勇気との向きあい方を自ずと知っていく様子も描かれていています。主にほんの数日の出来事にフォーカスをあてている物語なのに、Annemarieの成長と、合わせて、当時のデンマークの人々の様子もわかりやすく描かれていて読ませます。
…特に後半の赤頭巾ちゃんにかぶせた展開から、戦後のエピソードは一気読み。
蛇足ですが、赤頭巾ちゃんはRed Riding HoodのRidingって一体何なんでしょうね。疑問をもったKirstiは正しい！
